Former NBA Player Charged with Murder

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who played with the Washington Wizards – where he was involved in the infamous gun altercation with Gilbert Arenas, – has been officially charged with murder for the August 19, 2011 shooting of 22-year-old, mother of four, Jullian Jones.  Police don’t believe the Ms. Jones was the intended target since the motive appears to be retaliation for an earlier robbery that occurred in April of this year in which Crittenton was the victim.

“It’s my understanding there was some jewelry and other valuables that were stolen. It appears that [Crittenton] may have had an NBA ring that was stolen during the robbery,” Police said. “We had a great deal of outrage in that community shortly after Ms. Jones was shot, and we had a great deal of cooperation from people in the community.  We feel very good and comfortable with the evidence in this particular case.”

Crittenton, who played college ball in Atlanta at Georgia Tech, was the 19th overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2007 but was traded to Memphis his rookie year in the Pau Gasol deal.  He was then again traded, this time to Washington in December of 2008 and while a member of the Wizards he was given a 38-game suspension by Commissioner Stern after he and Gilbert Arenas acknowledged bringing guns into the locker room following a card game dispute on a team flight. (Crittenton pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge on January 25, 2010 and received probation.)

The Charlotte Bobcats signed Crittenton to a contract before last season but he was waived October 15, 2010.
