The National Football League and the Owners asked that collective bargaining mediation continue with federal mediator George Cohen, while the former NFL Players’ Association wanted court-supervised mediation. Since neither side could play nice with each other in the sandbox (or in this case – the gridiron) and agree to terms, U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson determined that she will make the decision and announced that she would use this weekend to figure out a solution – a solution that both sides will be forced to live with.

Val Ackerman was the founding president of the WNBA and is currently a board member and prior president of USA Basketball. In addition, she is the United States representative to FIBA, is a member of the board of governors for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and is a member of the board of directors for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Val is a faculty member at Columbia University in the City of New York where she teaches “Leadership and Personnel Management in the Sports Industry “ with another sports industry leader and prior CHAMPIONS inductee, Neal Pilson.
Val began her sports business career with the NBA where she was a lawyer and special assistant to Commissioner David Stern. “There is no one else in basketball with her set of experience and credentials,” commented Commissioner Stern, “Val is smart, talented and she is a good person. That is a winning combination.”
